National Reading Week

June 19, 2023 - June 25, 2023

‘National Reading Week’ is celebrated from 19th June to 25th June every year in India to symbolize the powerful role of reading in transforming our lives.

Making reading fun for children is a must to keep them engaged and generate healthy reading habits,

On 20th June 2023, students of class 1 were given storybooks to refer to from the classroom library. Children referred to different types of books: picture books, flip books, board books, soft picture books, concept books, etc.

The different parts of a story book were revised.

The story of a ‘Mixed Up Chameleon’, written and illustrated by Eric Carle was read to them. This book teaches children how to distinguish between animals and emphasizes the value of being oneself. The book’s gorgeous drawings drew their attention and made them giggle a lot.

Children appreciated it so much that they requested that the same story be told to them the next day during playtime. It was wonderful to see children interested in stories and having fun.

On 23rd June 2023 another story ‘Be Kind’ by Pat Miller, illustrated by Jen Hill, was read with a clear and beautiful message: if we all choose to be kind in the smallest ways – together, it will make a huge difference in the lives of people.

After the story was read and discussion had ended, children came forward to share their own stories with their friends in the class.

In this young age, it is important to instill a deep love of books in a child’s mind, which will help transform them into voracious readers in the future.
